Toenail Fungus Q & A

What is Toenail Fungus?

Toenail fungus is characterized by discoloration of the nail. In the early stages, this fungus appears as a yellow or white spot beneath the end of the toenail. If left untreated this fungus spreads deeper underneath the nail and causes the entire nail to turn yellow or white. A toenail with fungus may become excessively thick or very brittle at the edge. Generally, you will have toenail fungus on a single nail or those surrounding it. It tends not to spread to all of your toenails at once.

Why Do I Have Fungus on My Toenail?

One of the most common questions we are asked regards how fungus gets on the toenails to begin with. Understandably, if you have toenail fungus, you don’t want it to spread or come back once treated. The most common causes of nail fungus infections are yeasts, molds, and dermatophyte fungus. These fungi live in moist, warm environments. Patients become infected through tiny cuts in the skin or within the nail bed. One reason fungi are more prevalent in toenails is due to decreased blood flow. This causes a lack of immune response in the toes in order to fight off the infection.

How Does Dr. Joshi Treat Toenail Fungus in Woodland Park, NJ?

Here at Advanced Foot Care of New Jersey, Dr. Joshi and Dr. Kitrosser treat toenail fungus in Woodland Park using medication, and if necessary, foot surgery. For less serious cases of nail fungus, an anti-fungal drug can be taken orally to control the fungus. You may also be prescribed with a medicated cream or polish to apply to the infected toenail. In the instance that toenail fungus becomes more severe you may require nail removal. Keep in mind it can take up to a year for a new toenail to grow in its place. Another option is to use laser therapy to prevent the growth of toenail fungus. Typically Dr. Joshi and Dr. Kitrosser will use a combination of treatments to tackle fungus on toenails most effectively.
